WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF CAN-EX?
CAN-EX is an alternative news wire for campus publications. CAN-EX will provide alternative publications with a steady supply of news and articles about issues related to campuses and communities, as well as national and international political topics.
WHO IS INVOLVED?
Anyone involved in producing alternative media, particularly for student or youth communities.
WHY DO WE NEED CAN-EX?
At a time when mainstream media are becoming ever more narrow in its political dialogue and ownership, alternative media must continue to work more closely together in expanding the scope of political discussion. Alternative media serves an invaluable role in offering a voice for the voiceless, building solidarity across various progressive movements, exposing the unspoken truths ignored by mainstream media, and providing a dissenting perspective on political and social issues.
The CAN-EX hopes to minimize the amount of work that goes into design and article development. Since mainstream press wires are too expensive and too supportive of current political trends and institutions, CAN-EX offers a free, standardized library/wire of alternative and dissenting materials. An alternative news wire can be an essential mechanism for the creation and maintenance of alternative journals.
HOW IS CAN-EX DIFFERENT FROM OTHER CANET E-MAIL LISTS?
Unlike other CANET e-mail lists, CAN-EX is not a discussion list. The only postings on CAN-EX, aside from facilitative updates/commentary, will be material for campus publications. Material can include articles, press releases, essays, poetry, etc., more or less anything that can be sent via e-mail, and that alternative journalists might be interested in printing.
