Challenge the Lie$:

Lie #5

"Welfare and social security programs must be cut to 'save our future.' "

What's the Truth?

The major welfare program, AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children), is less than 2% of federal spending in 1996 -- hardly a budget buster.

People who want to end Social Security ignore a key reason the system may run out of funds - that that income over $62,700 is exempt from FICA tax! Ending this exemption while keeping limits on the benefits for wealthy people would take care of 90% of any revenue shortfall, according to the Social Security Administration.

When politicians claim to be "saving" us, who are they really trying to save?
